ASSIGNMENT #1: Trauma/Crisis
Specialization Project (40 PTS):
Students will gain comfort and
demonstrate their expertise in crises and trauma-informed care. After selecting
a topic of interest, students will develop a Powerpoint presentation (10-12
slides) to include clinical/research literature on: prevalence/populations
impacted, conceptualization/assessment, the effects of this specific
crisis/trauma topic, evidence-based treatment strategies.
Examples of
Crisis/Trauma-informed topics: combat related trauma, refugee related
trauma (people fleeing war torn countries), sexual victimization, assaults,
child abuse, intimate partner violence, school/mass shootings, natural
disasters, childhood trauma, crises of loss (e.g., death, divorce/separation),
medical crises, elderly abuse, first responder trauma.
Outline:
1.
Identify
the etiology, characteristics, and prevalence of crises/trauma-related issues.
2.
Identify
theoretical models of trauma/crisis counseling.
3.
Identify
the mental, emotional, physical impacts of crises/trauma.
4.
Identify
the strategies used to diagnose mental health conditions related to
trauma/crises.
5.
Identify
prevention, intervention, and treatment strategies.
6.
What
are the roles of the counselor as an advocate in crisis response?
7.
Identify
ethical issues that may arise in addressing crises/trauma.
Guidelines:
1. Compose a presentation
that is theoretically based, and reflects the current literature.
2. Compose
a thorough presentation, reviewing each of the outlined sections. Demonstrates
appropriate use of proofreading, APA/grammatical style, and organizational
skills.
3.
Compose a presentation that is
informative and is professionally presented.
