Assignment 1: “Issue I Care About”
Article Summary: In this class you will be writing a paper which will describe a specific issue area and a set of activities
undertaken by global organizations to address the issue. The first step in this process is to select an issue
area and to familiarize yourself with it by finding and describing a current article that addresses it.
After selecting an issue of interest to you, find a news article from a reputable source, and summarize the
article. Please see Handout “Respected News Sources” to be found in the Weekly Course Materials tab.
This handout is in the folder for the session labeled “Introduction-9/3/20.” This handout contains some
news outlets that are known for using formal sources of information in their reporting and are widely seen
as reputable and reliable. You may use other sources since the list provided is not complete but be sure
they are sources that use information from formal and varied sources.
In your summary address the following questions:
What is the issue addressed by the article? Very briefly describe the nature of the problem. Use
concrete examples offered in the article such as:
o Where is the problem taking place?
o Who is affected by it?
o What are the consequences for the affected individuals?
o Their community?
Does the article cite an organization that is addressing the problem? If so, what is this
organization and what are they doing? Do you think they are doing a good job?
What is your reaction to the article (e.g. surprise, insights, anger, helplessness, optimism,
ambivalence, fear, feelings of inspiration?) Explain your reactions.
Make sure you provide citations for the article you are using in APA format.
