In the article Evidence – Based Practice Implementation: Dependent on Capacity and Capabilities the author talks about the importance of adopting Evidence based practice (EBP) with the main benefit being patient safety. EBP facilitators are often scarce and nurse leader readiness is a major contributing factor to its success. Some major barriers that nurses can overcome are lack of knowledge/ skills, by continuing your education and staying up to date on latest research and new practices that are coming out. Burdensome beliefs, when it comes to patients your beliefs should be for the best care of the patient so you should want to do what is best practice. And organizational cultures that are not supportive. Time just like medicine is always changing, organizations need to change with it. There does not need to be room for close mindedness in medicine. The resistance to grow and learn especially in the medical field should be a person taking themselves out of their position. Evidence based practice is beneficial to patient care when implemented. Nursing leaders need to make EBP a priority on their units.

The article I chose was based off of Portuguese nurses who specialize in medical-surgical nursing. I also work on a medical-surgical floor, so this really spoke to me. The sample population of 218 who generally showed positive attitudes towards evidence based practice. Some benefits include improved patient outcomes, decreases costs associated with errors, and allows for more technology into healthcare practices. However, some barriers were also highlighted. Some of those included are: “lack of incentives, support of expert colleagues, training, financing, and time” (Pinto et al., 2023). I agree that these can all be barriers to patient care. I work at a small hospital and often times our larger facilities get the technology and resources first before it comes to us. One thing that our hospital just acquired was nurse servers. These go in the room and stock a general supply of what we may need do administer medications, basic patient needs, etc. These have been great in saving time and supples for us. These servers have simple reminders on them for needles and syringes for specific medication. They also help when we need to administer something quickly or need something urgently, we don’t have to run out of the room and down the hallway to get them. I know our ER has really enjoyed having easier access to supplies. This is just one example of funding and time to get these servers to assist staff with nursing care for our patients. Overall, I personally see decreases stress and frustration from staff. To conclude, with appropriate resources, more benefits can be seen from evidence based practice but there’s still some improvement that needs to happen.
