1) Discuss the charismatics of the Cuban revolution, in terms of the figures of Fidel
Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara. What details in their biographies become
important with respect to understanding their approach to politics and their role
in the Cuban revolution? What were the key themes of Che’s idea of the
Hombre Nuevo in Cuban revolutionary praxis? How did he seem to incarnate
that role personally — and how did his incarnation of that role make him an
exemplary, almost Christ-like figure? If you were to describe Che Guevara as
the paradigm of the revolutionary saint, how would you make the case? And
beside the resurrection of Che as a saint, is it possible also to speak about the
resurrection of Che as (perversely) commodifying socialism and revolution?

1) It did not take long after Monseñor Romero’s death for him to be widely
recognized as a saint: “San Romero of El Salvador.” Why / how did he become
a saint? Discuss this in terms of (a) the long-historical problems of Salvadoran
political economy; (b) Romero’s own biography4; (c) the experience of change
in Latin American Catholicism with liberation theology and the base community movements;5 (d) Romero’s friendships with church activists, especially Fr.
Rutilio Grande, S.J.; (e) Romero’s conversion and increasingly prophetic
preaching after March 12, 1977; (f) the politics of Pope Francis’s canonization
of Romero as a Roman Catholic saint.
